Have you ever heard of water ionization? It's a process that changes the pH of water, making it more alkaline. Alkaline water has become popular in recent years. With many people claim that it offers a variety of health benefits.
But what is the science behind water ionization? And is there any evidence to support the claims about its health benefits?
How does Water Ionization Work?
An electric current separates water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen ions. The negative electrode attacks the hydrogen ions. The positive electrode attracts the oxygen ions.
This process creates two different streams of water: one that is acidic and one that is alkaline. You collect each water for different uses. And while alkaline water is for drinking, you can use it for much more.
What are the Different Types of Water Ionizers?
There are two main types of water ionizers: countertop and under-the-counter. Countertop ionizers tend to be smaller and less powerful. Thus, these models are more affordable. Under-the-counter ionizers tend to be more powerful and produce more alkaline water. Thus, these ionizers are more expensive.
What are the Potential Health Benefits of Drinking Alkaline Ionized Water?
Many people claim to have experienced the following:
Improved hydration
Increased energy levels
Reduced inflammation
Boosted immune system
Improved digestion
Detoxification
Weight loss
Reduced risk of cancer
These are testimonials of people, though. Limited scientific evidence is unable to support these claims at the moment.
The Science of Water Ionization
Water has a pH scale of 7.0, which means that it is neutral. A pH of less than 7.0 is acidic, while a pH of more than 7.0 is alkaline.
Alkaline ionized water has a pH of between 8.5 and 9.5. This means that it is more alkaline than plain water.
Hydrogen ions play an important role in the body. Energy production, metabolism, and many other cellular processes involve hydrogen ions.
People think that alkaline ionized water increases hydrogen ions availability in the body. If so, this has many potential benefits. Improved hydration, increased energy levels, and reduced inflammation to name a few.
Evidence for the Health benefits of Alkaline Ionized Water
Some studies show that alkaline ionized water health benefits. For example, one study found that alkaline ionized water improved hydration in athletes. Another study found increased levels in people with chronic fatigue syndrome.
But, other studies found no benefit in drinking alkaline ionized water. Here are some examples:
One study found that alkaline ionized water did not improve blood sugar control in diabetics.
One study found that alkaline ionized water did not reduce inflammation in people with arthritis.
Frequently Asked Questions about Water Ionization
Q: Is alkaline ionized water safe to drink?
A: Yes, alkaline ionized water is safe to drink. People's experiences and studies show that it's no more harmful than plain water.
Q: Does alkaline ionized water have a different taste than plain water?
A: Some people say alkaline ionized water tastes sweeter. Other people say that it goes down smoother than plain water. Others say they cannot taste a difference.
Q: How much alkaline ionized water should I drink each day?
A: There is no recommended daily intake for alkaline ionized water. But, it is generally safe to drink as much as you like.
Conclusion
Water ionization is a process that changes the pH of water. This makes it alkaline and acidic. Both types of water have many uses, making it a great water solution for the home and business. Alkaline ionized water has become popular in recent years. Many people claim to experience changes in their body.
The scientific community needs more studies about the health benefits of this water. Also, the testimonials of people gives a mixed review of the water. I recommend you trying the water before making an investment in a water ionizer.
I will close with my story. I am a user of a water ionizer. I can attest to the better taste of alkaline ionized water. I can also attest to the smooth and light feeling as I drink it when compared to tap or bottled water. Alkaline ionized water keeps me hydrated throughout the day. I can feel and see in my skin. I can also feeling it in my bones.
As an active duty U.S. Marine, I pay attention to my hydration levels. I am aware of the signs of dehydration. The includes dry skin, ache joints, headaches, stomach pain or discomfort. When I am drinking alkaline ionized water, I don't have any of those symptoms. When I don't drink this water, I begin to experience these symptoms. Then I begin to add salt, electrolytes, and other supplements.
Moreover, I don't buy bottled water or pay at refilling stations. This saves me on a lot of money. I also do not contribute to the pollution of the planet.
